Who We Are
Wanting to provide affordable and local tuition, local residents James and Camilla Smoker founded Metropolitan Tutors in 2013. Since graduating with first-class honours from Cambridge and Birmingham City universities respectively, they have been personally tutoring for over 10 years alongside their extensive local team of tutors whom they have introduced to many satisfied students across all subjects, ages and levels.
For your peace of mind, all of our tutors are required to have an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (previously the Criminal Records Bureau). Furthermore, we personally interview every tutor and take up two professional references to ensure they meet our rigorous standards.
We require our tutors to have an in-depth knowledge of their subject area, but all of our tutors also have a calm, patient demeanour, the ability to analyse what’s really going on in a student’s mind, the skill to explain a topic in terms they can understand, and the desire to inspire students through creative lessons and their own passion for
In many cases a big part of a tutor’s job is to boost confidence in a student who feels weak in the classroom, socially or academically – a small amount of empowerment and encouragement really can rectify a multitude of academic problems. Therefore, we also value tutors who are able to build relationships of trust with their students.
Tutor of the Month
Since graduating from Cambridge in Natural Sciences and History and Philosophy of Science, Suzy has rapidly become one of our busiest tutors. Alongside her many GCSE science students, she is also preparing a number of younger pupils for their 11+ examinations, and has clocked up over 147 hours since the start of the year. She also loves the theatre, and wrote her dissertation on the scientific history of stage pyrotechnics.
“You helped [my son] a lot and in particular in English. The few hours you spent with him teaching him how to improve a text and make it lively has completely changed his style. He ended up being top of his class and still now he is doing extremely well. But most importantly, since you helped him literacy has become his favourite subject.” Parent of 11+ candidate, West London
“We have been extremely happy with Juzer’s tuition. His style and approach suited [our son] extremely well; he now understands much more and certainly his confidence in chemistry is much improved. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Juzer’s tuition and also he is such a polite and welcoming man – thank you for putting us in touch with him.” Parent of GCSE student, Moor Park
“I was very happy with Demetri and Joe! I got along well with them, and I found they taught me in a way that kept me engaged. They made me feel comfortable and I found them very approachable if I didn’t understand something. I found the tutoring incredibly helpful. When I finally sat my exams I realised I wouldn’t have understood half the questions if it wasn’t for them!” GCSE Student from Ruislip
“I cannot speak highly enough of both Camilla and James and their tutoring skills. They are passionate and very knowledgeable about their subjects but at the same time unbelievably patient and understanding when tutoring. My son loathed English and within only a couple of months I could see for myself a vast improvement in his work and, more importantly, in his whole attitude to the subject thanks to their considerate tutoring. Happily, my son sailed through his 11+ exams.” Parent of 11+ candidate, West London
